Protocol for the investigation of the herbal tincture "Elixir-3" performed in the Dispensery for prevention of pulmonary diseases in Rousse
the course of a complex treatment of patients with chronic bronchitis at the stage of aggravation, according to a contract between Eng. N. Hlebarov, President of the firm "St. Nicola" Ltd. and Dr. H. Mitev, Ph.D., at the Pulmonary hospital in Rousse.
The aim of this study was to follow up the effectiveness of the inhalation application of the herbal tincture "Elixir-3" in the course of a complex treatment of patients with chronic bronchitis at the stage of aggravation. A total of 20 patients with chronic bronchitis at the stage of aggravation were examined and divided into two clinical groups: Group I with inhalation application of Elixir- 3 and group II - control group, where the patients did not use herbal tincture.
"Tur-Osi" ultrasonic nebulizer was used for inhalation of the herbal tincture; the basic substance was diluted up to 20 ml with physiological serum and was applied twice daily in a dose of 40 drops in the course of 10 days. A questionnaire was filled in concerning the dynamic follow-up of the subjective symptoms, auscultatory findings, functional parameters and peak expiratory debit (PED) before and after each inhalation. The clinical parameters (cough, sputum, whistling respiration, stitches), as well as the auscultation were registered in four degrees at the same time by two researchers, the functional examination of the respiration (FER) was performed with Spirocomb-104-2 apparatus, and the peak flowmetry was carried out with Wright apparatus.
The subjective evaluation of the application of Elixir 3 is excellent in 60 %, good in 30 % and only one patient (10 %) pointed out that the effect of the herbal tincture is satisfactory.
Information in the literature about the composition of Elixir-3 showed that there is a presence of a number of substances with favourable effect on the epithelium of the respiratory system. For example, vitamin B2 (riboflavin) neutralizes the allergic reactions, vitamin B6 (pyrodoxin) enhances the regenerative ability of the epithelium, vitamnin C restricts the inflammatory reactions and decreases the permeability of the capillaries, and vitamin P (bioflavonoide) possesses enzymatic activity, inhibits the autooxidative processes. The ursolic and oleic acids contribute to the assimilation of a great number of valuable for the organism biologically active substances. Elixir-3 exerts anti-inflammatory and stimulating effects on the regenerative processes in the respiratory epithelium. The direct application by using inhalation potentiates its effectiveness in cases of aggravation of chronic pulmonary deseases.
Results of the dynamics of subjective complaints indicate undoubtedly a faster influence on the examined patients in comparison with the control group. The basic symptoms of local irritation (cough and sputum) decrease and disappear on the 2nd-3rd day. The comparison of the changes in FEO1 in both groups of examined persons also proves the very good effect of inhalation of the herbal tincture, which suggests a possibility after 4-5 days the application of the elixir to continue as an ambulant therapy, thus realizing also an economical effect. The follow-up of the dynamics in the peak expiratory debit (PED) supports the above-mentioned conclusions regarding the positive activity of the tincture on the functional parameters. Peak flowmetry before and after inhalation directly proves the deobstructive and secretolytic properties of the preparation which has not been described up to now in similar investigations. Each medicament applied locally carries the potential danger of irritative activity while Elixir 3 has no irritative (injurious) action, and the effect of its application is even bronchodilation. This suggests the possibility to use this preparation in patients with bronchial asthma, tuberculosis, bronchoectasia, etc.
Conclusions
The analysis of the obtained results from the comparative investigation of the preparation Elixir-3 gives ground to draw the following conclusions:
- because of its good influence on the objective symptoms in patients with bronchoobstructive pulmonary diseases;
- because of the recorded good influence in short periods of time on the functional parameters in these patients;
- because of the lack of observed side effects and good subjective perception of the preparation;
- because of the possibility after initial disappearance of the symptoms the application of this elixir to continue as an ambulant therapy;
It may be recommended for use in the specialized and general practitioner’s network in cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, as well as in other chronic pulmonary diseases with similar symptoms.
