Protocol of a clinical investigation of Elixi- 3 herbal tincture for treatment of bacterial vaginitis

Introduction

The clinical investigation was performed on 34 ambulant patients at reproductive age in the oncoprophylactic consulting room of the University Maternity Hospital from November 13, 1995 to April 8, 1996.

Bacterial vaginitis is the most frequent reason for genital fluor in women. The causative agent is a Gram-labile coccobacillus, facultative anaerobe with the taxonomical name Gordnerella vaginalis. The disease proseeds chronically in the course of months and years. Medicamentous therapy is difficult, and frequently recurrences are observed. Furthermore, the infection seriously disturbs the normal flora and biocoenosis of the vagina which is transformed in a “container” of pathogenic flora. Ascending infections of the internal genital organs are frequently observed in these women. Premature rupture of the amniotic sac, outflow of the amniotic waters and premature delivery of intrauterine infected babies occur more frequently in pregnant women.

The disease was dignosed by anamnesis, colposcopic analysis and native microscopic preparation of vaginal content. Women with serious, chronic, recurrent infections, treated recently without any success, were selected.

The preparation was applied as follows:

  1. Application per vaginam: 1 tablespoon of Elixir-3 is diluted in 200 ml tepid water. Lavage is made each evening with “vaginal shower” in the course of 14 days. This procedure begins immediately after the end of menstruation.
  2. Application per os: 60 drops of Elixir-3 in 100 ml of mineral or boiled water 6 times daily.
  3. Control examination after the next menstruation which includes:
    1. subjective evaluation of the women concerning the effect of the treatment;
    2. colposcopy;
    3. native microscopic preparation from the vaginal content.

Results

Out of 34 patients 19 women did not come to be subjected to control examination till the end of the investigation. Since all women live in Sofia, and they gain advantage over the other patients during the control examination, it means that the treatment was favourable in most of these women.

The control examination which included 15 women revealed the following picture: restored to health - 8, improved - 6, no changes - 1.

All women tolerated well the treatment, without any side-effects, discomfort or allergic reactions.

Conclusion

The application of herbal tincture Elixir-3 to women with bacterial vaginitis showed a very good therapeutic effect and lack of unwanted side-effects. The normal vaginal flora was restored in more than the half of the patients.

Treatment with Elixir may be recommended either as auxiliary, and as a basic means in therapeutic combination in women with chronic-recurrent bacterial vaginit. April 8, 1996, Sofia
