A Long Survey of the Effect of Bulgarian Herbal Extracts on 11 Patients with HIV- Infection

Introduction

It is well known, that HIV destroys mainly the immune system of the infected body, damaging the general condition ( reduced working capacity down to adynamia, loss of body weight, appetite, sleep etc.), which can be registered by way of specific immune markers and objective clinical investigations. The survey of these parameters has an important diagnostic and prognostic significance for the initial clinical image of the AIDS syndrome in symptomless HIV carrier. Registration of unfavourable al¬ternations of those indicis gives an opportunity for a timely influence on the immunity and general helth condition and for setting farther away the start point of the Syndrome as well as for life quality improving. Besides the accepted triple combination of antiretroviral preparations as therapeutic standard, there are also breaking news for the favourable influence and preserving of the symptomless period of the HIV infection with the assistance of native means, which influence positively the affected immunity and prolonge the asymptomatic period.

Material and Methods

We used Elixir 9 - a combination of water-ethanol extracts of following 19 Bulgarian herbs: Ocimum basilicum,Humulus lupulus, Mentha piperita, Rosa canina, Plantago lanceolata, Origanum vulgare, Rubus fruticosus, Corylus avellana, Betula pendula, Juglans regia, Urtica dioica, Calendula officinalis, Sambucus nigra, melon seed, Salvia officinalis, Hypericum perforatum, Helianthus annuus, Aesculus hippocastanum, Salix alba, produced by .St.Nicola.EOOD, Bulgaria, registered as nutritional supplement.

We have treated 11 HIV-positive patients at different stage of HIV-infection during 2 to 5 years. Our observation was CLINICAL and IMMUNOLOGICAL. CLINICAL OBSERVATION was made on the base of following criteria: Subjective . general condition, working capacity, complaints, appetite and sleep; Objective . body weight and clinical pathology.

The clinical data of patients before treatment were:

  • Patient 1: 25 years old man infected with HIV since 6 years. Complaints: low spirits, low working capacity, weakness and depressive thoughts, bad appetite and sleep. Clinical pathology: lymphoadenopathy, Candidosis, epidermophity.
  • Patient 2: 25 years old woman, infected since 6 years. Complaints: poor spirits, low working capacity, violent headache, bad appetite and sleep. Clinical pathology: lymphoadenopathy and Candidosis.
  • Patient 3: 44 years old woman, HIV-positive since 14 years. Complaints: poor spirits, low working capacity, headache, weakness, lack of appetite and insomnia. Clinical pathology: lymphoadenopathy, Herpes Zoster virus, gastro-entero-colitis, Candidosis, Moniliasis. Weight loss > 10%.
  • Patient 4: 14 years old boy, infected since 7 years. Complaints: fatigue, bad appetite and sleep. Clinical pathology: haemophilia, Hepatitis C virus, pneumonia. Weight loss-10%.
  • Patient 5: 29 years old man, infected with HIV since 5 years. Complaints: low spirits, decreased working capacity, depressive thoughts and bad sleep. Clinical pathology: lymphoadenopathy,
  • bronchitis, diarrhea.
  • Patient 6: 22 years old woman,infected since 4 years.Complaints of being tired, fatigue,weakness, depressive thoughts, lack of appetite and insomnia. Clinical pathology: lymphoadenopathy, bronchitis,Candidosis. Weight loss > 10%.
  • Patient 7: 28 years old woman, infected since 6 years.Comlaints: lack of self-confidance, depression, total loss of working capacity, lack of appetite, poor sleep.Clinical pathology: extremely injured general condition, TBC of thracheo-bronchial lymph nodes, generalized lymphoadenopathy, > 10% weight loss.
  • Patient 8: 6 years old male child, born by HIV+ mother.Very poor general condition pneumonia, generalized lymphoadenopathy, >10% weight loss.
  • Patient 9: 33 years old man, infected since 3 years.Complaints:feels very ill, no strenth to walk alone, lack of any working capacity, bad sleep-nightmares, total lack of appetite. Clinical pathology: extremely bad general condition, cahesion, TBC, pneumonia.
  • Patient 10: 32 years old woman, infected since 3 years.Comlaints:poor self-estimation, reduced worcing capacity, faintness, headache.Clinical pathology:affected general condition, lymphoadenopathy, 10% weight loss.
  • Patient 11: 48 years old man, infected since 15 years.Complaints: bad self-confidence, unsociable,depressed, scared, of bad sleep and appetite. Clinical pathology: affected general condition, generalized lymphoadenopathy, moderate weight loss < 10%.

IMMUNOLOGICAL MONITORING of patient was made on the basis of absolute number of CD4+ cells in peripheral blood at 6-month intervals.

5 patients (nn. 1, 2, 3 and 4) were treated only with Elixir 9 during 3 years. After 3 years, 2 of them (n. 1 and 2) continued only with Elixir 9 two years more, as well one patient (n. 5) .only with Elixir 9 one year more. Two patients (n. 3 and 4 ) continued the treatment with antiretroviral therapy and Elixir 9, we treated the Patient n. 3 two years more, and Patient n. 4-one year more.

We observed 6 HIV-positive patients (2 asymptomatic and 4 with symptomatic HIV- infection) during 2 years.Two asymptomless patients (n. 6 and 10) were treated only with Elixir 9, four patients (nn.7, 8, 9 and 11)- with antiretroviral therapy and Elixir 9.

Results

  • 5 patients: 4 asymptomatic (nn. 1, 2, 4 and 5) and 1 symptomatic-n. 3, during 3 years were treated only with Elixir 9.After 3 years, 3 of them (nn. 1, 2 and 5) had improvement in general condition and immune status, but 2 of them (n. 3 with persistent low count of absolut number of CD4+ lymphocytes and some symptoms and n. 4 with some symptoms continued antiretroviral therapy, combined with Elixir 9. The Patients n. 1 and 2 have continued only with Elixir 9 two years more till now, all 5 years they are in good condition.One patient (n. 5) has continued 1 year more only with Elixir 9 .all 4 years observation till now, he is also in good general condition.
  • 2 of observed 6 patients during the last 2 years: n. 6 and 10 with asymptomatic HIV-infection, treated only with Elixir 9 are in good general condition and clinic health.
  • 3 of patients (nn. 7, 8 and 9) with symptomatic HIV-infection, treated with antiretroviral therapy and Elixir 9 have improvement in general condition, clinical and immune status, have stood bether the toxic effects of retroviral therapy.
  • Only 1 patient (n. 11) with longest stage of HIV-infection (15 years) rests without any changes in the immune and clinical status, but he has a light improvement in the general condition.
  • All of 11 patients have been in good general condition, with high spirit and working capacity.The clinical symptoms of all 6 symptomatic patients have been reduced to lack.

The IMMUNOLOGIC MONITORING is shown on the following Table.

The TABLE 1 shows an increasing and tendency to retain a constant level of CD4+ lymphocytes count.

All of 6 patients, treated simultaneously with antiretrovirals and herbal extracts have stood easier the side toxic effects of antiretroviral therapy.

Conclusions

Our combination of Bulgarian herbal extracts has shown the significant improvement in general condition of HIV positive patients, observed between 2 and 5 years; stimulating the immune system, reducing the
